THE ENERGY JOURNEY

From daylight.
To everyday.

Solar makes more sense when you can follow the route. Here’s how the main pieces relate, without a maze of product specifications.

01

Capture the light.

Photovoltaic cells in solar panels generate direct-current electricity from daylight. Available light changes with weather, season and the roof’s surroundings. Panels can generate in cloudy conditions, but output varies; a bright summer illustration is not a promise of everyday performance.

02

Make it usable.

An inverter converts that direct current into alternating current for the property’s electrical system. Its type and arrangement need to suit the proposed panels, property and any storage. The equipment works as a system, so comparing one component in isolation can miss important design decisions.

03

Meet the moment.

The property can use generated electricity while appliances and other electrical loads are running. If demand is greater than generation, other available sources supply the difference. Moving a suitable activity into daylight hours can change how much generation is used on site, but depends on your routine and equipment.

04

Consider the surplus.

When generation exceeds demand, surplus may charge a compatible battery if one is installed and has capacity, or flow to the grid. Storage and export are separate decisions. Network arrangements and any export payment depend on the agreed system and applicable arrangements with the relevant parties.

A system.
Not a guarantee.

A useful proposal explains the property assessment, expected generation and how the system is intended to operate. It should distinguish estimates from guarantees and identify the assumptions behind them. Ask about monitoring, controls, responsibilities and the information you will receive at handover.
